Medication Management

Mental health conditions can have a profound impact on an individual’s quality of life. They can affect emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and overall well being. Medications prescribed to manage these conditions are a cornerstone of treatment and can help individuals regain stability, manage symptoms, and improve the quality of day to day life.

What is Medication Management?

Mental health conditions can have a profound impact on an individual’s quality of life. They can affect emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and overall well being. Medications prescribed to manage these conditions are a cornerstone of treatment and can help individuals regain stability, manage symptoms, and improve the quality of day to day life.

Medication management is a critical aspect of comprehensive psychiatric care provided to individuals facing a wide range of mental health conditions, including, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more. Psychiatric medication management, alone or with psychotherapy, can be a crucial piece to creating balance and improving your overall wellbeing.
Finding the right medication can be frustrating. Primary care providers and family doctors are often helpful for receiving a diagnosis and an initial treatment plan, but they do not always have the training, experience, or exposure to handle the nuances of psychiatric medication management. At NeuStart Psychiatry & TMS, your medication will be managed by a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). PMHNP-BC’s are advanced practice nurses who have undergone specialized training in mental health care. They have the knowledge and expertise to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. Our PMHNP-BCs have the most up to date information and regularly engage in continuing education to stay up to date on new research and treatment options.

What to Expect in a Medication Management Appointment:

During your initial medication management appointment, your provider conducts an assessment to determine the necessity for medication. You’ll discuss your physical and mental health history, review diagnoses, and analyze past and current medications. After the assessment, you and your provider will develop a treatment plan, designed to meet your treatment goals, such as feeling less sad, improving focus, or reducing anxiety.

Regular medication management appointments involve assessing the medication’s efficacy, discussing potential side effects, monitoring dosage and use, and exploring other treatment options, as necessary.

How Long is a Medication Management Appointment?

Your fist appointment with one of our providers ranges from 60-90 minutes. Subsequent appointments are generally 15-30 minutes long.

Why is Medication Management Important?

Mitigate Interactions from Multiple Medications

Sometimes, medications can interact and cause unpleasant side effects. Working with an expert in psychiatric medications management can help prevent these side effects through medication changes, dosages changes, or exploring other treatment options.

Safety

Approximately 50% of medication deaths are due to contraindications, errors in prescriptions, or dosing. Attending regular medication management appointments reduces the chances for potentially dangerous or fatal events. Proper medication management can reduce hospitalizations and Emergency Department Visits

Cost

Medications can be expensive. You may be able to reduce the number of medications trials or medications you regularly take through proper medication management
